CITY: Athens, Georgia

Athens-Clarke County is a unified city-county in Georgia, U.S., in the northeastern part of the state. The University of Georgia is located in this college town and is responsible for the initial growth of the city. The most interesting parts of Athens-Georgia are:

  • Double Barreled Cannon. This cannon was designed to shoot twin cannonballs connected by a chain. The designers didn't take into account the impossibility of synchronization, and the cannon was never used.
  • The Tree That Owns Itself. Colonel W.H. Jackson willed a tree on this spot to itself many years ago. Note: the original tree fell over in 1942; this is its son.
  • University of Georgia Old Campus. Stroll the grounds of America's oldest state-chartered university. Of particular interest are the Arch, Demosthenian and Phi Kappa Halls, the Chapel, Old College, and the Library.

    LOCATION

Georgia is a state located in the southeastern United States and established in 1732. With an estimated 9,829,211 residents (July 2009) Georgia is the ninth most populous state. From 2007 to 2008, 14 of Georgia's counties ranked among the nation's 100 fastest-growing, second only to Texas. Georgia is known as the Peach State and the Empire State of the South. Atlanta is the capital and the most populous city. Georgia is bordered on the south by Florida; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina; on the west by Alabama; and on the north by Tennessee and North Carolina. The northern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a mountain range in the vast Appalachian Mountains system. The central piedmont extends from the foothills to the fall line, where the rivers cascade down in elevation to the continental coastal plain of the southern part of the state. With an area of 153,909 km2, Georgia is ranked 24th in size among the 50 U.S. states. It is the largest state east of the Mississippi River in terms of land area, although it is the fourth largest in total area, a term which includes expanses of water which are part of state territory.

    WEATHER

The climate of Georgia is typical of a humid subtropical climate with most of the state having mild winters and hot summers. The Atlantic Ocean on the east coast of Georgia and the hill country in the north impact the state's climate. Many summer days in Georgia have been known to exceed 32°C. Athens, Georgia temperatures by summer can be characterized by an average temperature that is 25.2°C in July.
